Edward Jenner - 1749-1823 Edward Jenner, a British physician, theorized that those who were exposed to a particular strain of cowpox would not contract smallpox. While his theory was initially scorned by the medical profession, in 1796 he performed a successful experimental vaccination by innoculating a young boy with the related cowpox virus to build immunity against the deadly scourge of smallpox. |
