Florence Nightingale - 1820-1910 Florence Nightingale, a British philanthropist, is recognized as the founder of modern nursing and reformer of hospital conditions. During and after the Crimean War she fought for effective reform of the entire system of military hospitals and medical care. She founded a training school for nurses and was known as the leading expert on military and civilian sanitation.
